Wow….I cannot BELIEVE this news and right at the start of New York Fashion Week! A spokesperson has confirmed that iconic fashion designer Alexander McQueen has been found dead in his London home, an apparent suicide at the age of 40. His company’s communications director, Samantha Garrett, says McQueen’s body was found Thursday morning. She says, “We don’t have any information in terms of circumstances.”
His company, Alexander McQueen, issued a statement saying: “On behalf of Lee McQueen’s family, Alexander McQueen today announces the tragic news that Lee McQueen, the founder and designer of the Alexander McQueen brand, has been found dead at his home. At this stage it is inappropriate to comment on this tragic news beyond saying that we are devastated and are sharing a sense of shock and grief with Lee’s family.”
Born in London in 1969 as the youngest of six children, McQueen left school at the age of 16 and was immediately offered an apprenticeship at the traditional Saville Row tailors Anderson and Shephard and then at neighboring Gieves and Hawkes. McQueen was a four-time winner of the British designer of the year award, he received the International Designer of the Year Award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America as well as the CBE in 2003. McQueen was extremely close to the late Isabella Blow, who is credited with discovering him as a young designer. McQueen was one of the most talented and prolific designers of the past decade if not more. The beauty looks and stories his shows told were legendary.
He will be missed….
