Essence Magazine & Johnson’s ask, “What’s Your Beauty Secret??”

I was supposed to attend this event in DC but couldn’t make it.  Luckily for me I was able to catch it again in NYC this past weekend.  What the heck am I talking about you ask??  The Essence Magazine/Johnson’s & Johnson’s brunch at the W Hotel in New York.  They asked the question, “What’s Your Beauty Secret??”.  Loads of tips and tricks were thrown around, we laughed and took notes and tweeted them all.  Guests were treated to manicures, chair massages great music and a light brunch (complete with mimosas!).  Manicurists treated us to one of Johnson’s latest products, a baby creamy oil with cocoa and shea butter (So nice….) and to top it all off the event was a charitable one.  The event supported The WEEN Network, an organization that promotes the positive portrayal of women in society and entertainment.

Hosted by Mikki Taylor, Beauty Director of Essence Magazine, we sat down to a light brunch while chatting with a panel of all-star beauty experts that included Celebrity Makeup Artist Tia Dantzler, Celebrity Makeup Artist Sam Fine (who is SO funny, he had me cracking UP all day), Dr. Rosemarie Ingleton, M.D., P.C. a celebrity NYC Dermatologist and Lisa Wu-Hartwell of Real Housewives of Atlanta.  The event was SO much fun because I got to meet some new people AND I got a chance to hang with my NYC beauty sisters, Kristin Booker, Aly Walansky, India Jewel-Jackson and Felicia Walker Benson.

Some of the panel’s beauty secrets:

  1. Always wear moisturizer. Even if you have oily skin and think you don’t need it.  Several oil free formulas are available
  2. Get as much sleep as you can a night — it’s good for your skin, and your skin will show it if you don’t.
  3. If you CANT get enough sleep, familiarize yourself with techniques to make it looks like you do.
  4. Drink tons of water a gallon a day if you can. Lisa Wu-Hartwell swears by it, and she is absolutely gorgeous in person, skin and all.
  5. Always cleanse before bed — no matter how tired/drunk/busy you think you are.
  6. Sam Fine says “spackle before you paint” – as in be sure to use concealer before you put on your makeup!
  7. Use highlighter and bronzer to create looking fabulous skin – but only go a shade darker with the bronzer than your own skin tone.
  8. Want to make your legs look more toned, or add some pretty shimmer?  Mix baby oil gel with bronzer!
  9. Use a cleanser with Kojic acid to help brighten up dark spots.
  10. Use Hydroquinone and other dermatologist only products to help out your problem dark spots.  Sometimes over the counter remedies don’t get the job done (not a high enough percentage) and you have to call in the “big guns” and go see a dermatologist.

What are some of YOUR beauty secrets??  Please share some….

Stay Pretty!!

I always go to the dermatologist for my skincare needs. This is where you find the real products that take age off your skin. I also use an organic skin care line out of Germany called Lavera. It has such good cleansers and moisturizers.
