Beauty News: Red Door Spas Opens Striking New Color Salon w/Brad Johns in NYC…

There was a whole lot of shaking going on in NYC at the Red Door’s Fifth Avenue flagship location recently, and I’m not just talking about the construction! With the recent expansion of Red Door Spas’ hair category, hair color is taking on an exciting new tone, thanks to the new Brad Johns studio at Elizabeth Arden Red Door Spas. Celebrity colorist, Brad Johns, Color Director for the spa’s New York flagship location, moved to his new studio on the seventh floor in February 2010. The studio incorporates a new level of cutting-edge beauty in every aspect of the space from client styling to studio design to the art on the walls. There was a huge party to celebrate the opening recently that featured local media and taste makers. Red Door is evolving and changing these days as you may remember the va va va voom hair I was able to treat busy beauty editors to during New York fashion week and the knockout job they did in Chicago on my housewife contest winner. This new studio in NYC is a testament to that evolution.

Brad Johns Studio 007 Beauty News: Red Door Spas Opens Striking New Color Salon w/Brad Johns in NYC...

The groundbreaking studio is ensconced in simple black and white – a “safe coloring space” – which allows johns to focus solely on the color of his clients’ skin and hair without distraction from ambient hues. From the steel mesh curtains to the black rubber flooring to the illuminated white Plexiglas, the studio stresses a stylish subtlety in design, letting the artistry of its star take center stage.

The studio features 12 combination hair/color stations in 667 square feet of space, allowing johns to offer guests VIP color treatments in a private and unique setting. While johns is first and foremost a colorist, his studio will also offer haircuts and styling by Chris Cusano, who has been teaming with johns since the start of his career. In contrast to the starkness of the space, the studio will also showcase johns’ work as a painter and gold and silversmith. A bold portrait featuring the women in his life who inspired him to focus on the art of color, will hang on the wall. Inspirational “house jewelry” crafted by the colorist himself will also be displayed.

“We are thrilled to have brad johns as part of the Red Door Spas family and to be able to provide a home where johns can continue to create art and inspire others,” said Todd Walter, Chief Executive Officer of Red Door Spa Holdings. “This unique space will serve as johns’ working studio, as well as home to Red Door’s very own Style and Color Education Programs.”

Dubbed the “Golden Boy,” johns’ most famous trend was the use of “chunking” – a blond-on-blond technique that results in “child-on-the-beach” hair. However, johns is constantly evolving, creating new methods and setting fresh trends. He is famous for divulging his coloring secrets to his protégés and the press alike because he can easily create something new and fresh tomorrow. Johns’ head-turning color techniques all have a strikingly simple core philosophy: hair color should complement the eyes first, the skin second and the season third. The shade range in which someone should stay is determined by his or her childhood hair color.

“The secret to keeping clients in their comfort zone and still achieving color that complements their skin tone and eyes”, says johns, “is to stay close to their comfortable shade while creating a more artistic version of that color for them.”. Indeed it is….
