Do you have dry skin? I do, my skin is like an alligator in the winter, dry flakies everywhere! I try to exfoliate once a week but the key is a good moisturizer to go with that. Aveeno is AMAZING at coming up with great products that get the job done at a reasonable price.

If you remember, I went to Los Angeles last February for the Independent Spirit awards with Aveeno where I got to try new products and meet with the people behind the line. One of the products was Aveeno Positively Nourishing 24 Hour Body Moisturizer [$8.49]. We got to have massages using the Positively Nourishing Body Moisturizer, and we had our choice of Aveeno Postively Nourishing in Soothing, with vanilla and chamomile; or Invigorating, with grapefruit and rosemary and Refreshing, with blueberry and goji berry. I did the Refreshing and I had the best masseuse that I nearly fell asleep on the table!

The lotions all have their own subtle scent so it definitely doesn’t overpower. They are super moisturizing and they do a great job of keep your skin hydrated. Aveeno also uses their signature nourishing oatmeal which helps sooth dry skin too. All in all a win/win, plus the drugstore price and the size of he bottle makes this a Drugstore Diva approved buy.

How can you miss reality star turned supermogul Bethenny Frankel? First she was an author making her mark in the publishing industry with several popular self help books. Then when she started making her self described skinnygirl margarita on the BRAVO TV reality series The Real Housewives of New York City…EVERYONE wanted one (the recipe is still my margarita of choice). Then the unthinkable…she quit the show. Just as everyone counted Ms. Frankel out, she launched the Skinnygirl brand of pre-mixed margaritas for a mere $14.95 per bottle (I mean, come on…a cocktail in NYC is $14) and got her own deal with BRAVO to do a show. The bottles of Skinnygirl margarita were so popular that there were distribution problems at one point. She developed more versions (a white cranberry cosmo and sangria) all with the same natural low calorie approach. Then she eventually sold the brand to Fortune Brands Inc.’s Beam Global for an estimated $120 million making her one of the most profitable reality stars in TV history. Thats a lot to do in a few years right???

Must Have: Votre Vu On Holiday Moisturizing Spray Body Oil…

I have written here before about by unforgiving dry scaly alligator skin in the winter. The inside of my black leggings looks like a snowstorm sometimes when I take them off!! (TMI I know, but I must share with you the magnitude of my problem.…LOL). To that end, I am constantly looking for new ways to keep the skin on my body fully hydrated. The combo that seems to work best is regular weekly exfoliation and some sort of heavy cream or oil. After I visited We Care Spa back over the summer, I was introduced to detoxifying your skin by dry brushing it before you bathe. By doing so, you get a better detoxifying sweat in the sauna/steam room because all the dry skin has been eliminated! So once a week, I brush all those dry flakies off my body before a bath/shower and the moisturizer seems to get deeper into my skin.

My latest obsession for my dry skin is Votre Vu On Holiday Spray Body Oil [$49]. This genius formula is concocted from an aromatic and therapeutic blend of grape seed oil, sweet almond oil, apricot kernel oil, refined wheat germ oil and virgin jojoba oil. I spray right after the shower or bath while my skin is still damp, feet, stomach, arms, legs, even on hard to reach places like my back. TMG Faves: Mario Badescu Summer Shine Body Lotion…

Just as skincare for the face transitions for warmer weather so should body care. I love how heavier lotions and creams make my skin feel BUT when it’s 100 degrees outside, sometimes it can be a bit much. Mario Badescu Summer Shine Body Lotion [$10.00 for 6 oz. or $22.00 for 16 oz.], is a totally greaseless lotion that moisturizes enriched with vitamin A, peanut oil and beeswax. Extremely light feeling, this lotion also has a very beachy and tropical scent (but not sweet). Another plus is the subtle shimmer, which is quite noticeable but not in a glittery way (it makes a tan look AMAZING).

The lotion feels weightless and absorbs into skin quickly – so much so that you can get dressed fairly quickly without fear of it getting on your clothes. Beauty junkies beware….once you try one Mario Badescu product, there is no turning back. You will quickly become obsessed like me!! Some of my other favorites are the Vitamin C Serum, Seaweed Cleansing Lotion and Enzyme Cleansing Gel. The great thing about the products is the formulations AND the price…plus they have been around since the 60′s keeping skin pretty.

TMG Faves: Lifetherapy Bodycare…

When I was at the uber fabulous Robert Verdi’s Luxe Lab Lounge this past February, I was introduced to many an obsession (as always…Robert has a knack for finding THE thing(s) that you will go crazy for). One such thing was Lifetherapy Bodycare by Lynette Lovelace (don’t you just love her name?!?!!) She was super cool and was so exuberant when she was talking about her line! Lynette’s philosophy is that every soul is unique so you should choose your fragrances according to your mood. In this case – she has created five…all of which I would consider wearing at any given time.

Vacation Sexy and warm

Flirt Innocent and playful

Escape Clean and crisp

Chill Subtle and peaceful

Each line has a coordinating pulse point oil, hand cream, lotion and ultra rich body cream. I am rocking Vacation at the moment because that’s where I want to be – on a vacation…LOL. No seriously, the scents are very light and subtle. Vacation is that perfect blend of suntan lotion, vanilla and a slight undercurrent of a soft floral. Very beachy and very sexy….totally love it. TMG Faves: Plush Skin New York Body Collection…

I love stories about artisan beauty products, especially if the person making the product has a connection or a story. I recently had the pleasure of meeting Erica Wigley who is the Creative Director of an emerging company called Plush Skin. Erica is a native New Yorker who grew up watching her father make hand made soaps. “I watched my father make soaps in our kitchen.” Wigley said “He would carefully mix the proper ingredients, pour his finished batch into a pan, and wait for it to cool and harden.” she continued, “His creativity would culminate with me cutting the soap into tiny bars. Over the years I would marvel at my father’s skills. He never followed a written recipe. It all came from his mind. He was in his element of creation and it brought him great peace. I listened to his stories about his grandmother, Pepita. As a young boy, Pepita shared her love of mixing ingredients with my father.Now I am following in his footsteps.” Amazing, right? I think so!!

Erica used her own kitchen as a lab and mixed her concoctions until she felt it was time to share them with the world, soon Plush Skin was born. She has started with a small collection (very smart) consisting of three items that are done very well. The collection is called “New York Ambition” Trilogy Body Collection definitely lives up to it’s name. Wigley says, “This body collection is a celebration of LOVE. A love that breathes NEW YORK determination. As a native New Yorker, there is an essence of something intangible that the City brings to many visitors andnatives alike. Each product pays homage to a unique aspect of New York.” LOVE IT….I am a NYer at heart as well so I definitely understand. I have tried two of the three in the collection and I am in LOVE. The scent is hard to describe…kind of citrusy floral – very complimentary.

Are you a hot shower junkie like me? I don’t care what the temperature is, I ADORE a hot shower. My skin however, does not share my reckless enthusiasm. My skin is ALWAYS dry, so to overcompensate for my atrocities I have to use THICK body creams year round (small sacrifice in my opinion). Well, darlings, I am proud to say that they have rocketed back into my life and have my FULL ATTENTION!! I just got my hands on the ENTIRE new Citron, Honey and Coriander range, and I am quite impressed! The line includes a mouthwatering lemony Body souffle, skin quenching body lotion, beautifully presented cake soap “body bars”, scrub and liquid body soap. It even includes 3 delicious “lip butters” which are really “like buttah” in mouthwatering flavors such as Vanilla Creme Brulee, Citron Creme and Honey, and Creme de Menthe. Now that is what I call a full range!

Pumpkin, apricot and peach oils are also used liberally in this range, and I love that tea tree oil plays a part as well. One thing I loved when I was a kid was the fact that they have always used very natural ingredients with natural smelling products. That has only gotten better over time.

I love the herbal vegetable based soap!! It not only purifies, but moisturizes and naturally deodorises with a special blend of evening primrose oil and sheabutter. They help bond a sugar derived deodoriser to the skin. How fab! How natural! Sometimes ladies, when I have a hot bath, I just want to hold some old fashioned soap in my hands, but I still want it to look and smell pretty. This isn’t the time for lurid Irish Spring rectangular cakes. The body bars are oval shaped and look as if you could eat them for dessert. It looks as if it’s filled with juicy bits of real lemon! Once you open the sheath, even wrapped in plastic (with a cute little tree sticker on their tummies!) you get a blast of lemony goodness!

Another favorite, the Body Souffle….has lemon, fruit and sugar derived Alpha Hydroxy Acids to smooth away roughness and even your skin texture. I can’t tell you how much I need that after having a baby! You can really smell and feel the honey and a special blend of apricot and peach kernel oils leaving your skin radiant, smelling amazing, and moisturised! I massaged my husband’s hands with it, (and his hands are extra ashy..) and not only did they look great afterwards, he fell asleep!!!

You all know of my tales of woe with my super dry skin…well I have a great solution for you in the form of a tried and true product in a new formulation. Kiehl’s Creme De Corps Soy Milk & Honey Whipped Body Butter [$35] is a TMG Faves item and a must have on my counter for silky smooth skin with absolutely no dryness. This is whipped, fluffy and light as air it also smells divine. Not in that perfumey way but in a natural clean way that doesn’t compete with your fragrance. The cream should last a good long time as a little bit goes a long way. Very light on the skin yet rich in 24-hour hydration.

The Rundown:

Shea Butter the natural fat obtained from the fruit of the African Karate tree and is widely used in lotions and cleansing products for its hydrating properties. Protects skin from dehydration, restores skin’s suppleness and improves the appearance of dry skin.
Squalane a highly refined moisturizing oil derived from the olive; Squalane is very silky and easily absorbed and has been found to be extremely compatible with the natural oils of the skin; we use Squalane in many of our formulations.
Jojoba extracted from the beanlike seeds of the desert shrub Simondsia Chinensis and has been traditionally used by both Mexicans and Native Americans for skin care purpose. It reduces transepidermal water loss without completely blocking the transportation of water vapor and gasses, providing suppleness and softness. It is nurturing for the skin and helps to restore skin’s natural lipid barrier.

Drugstore Diva: Olay Total Effects 7-in-1 Advanced Anti-Aging Body Wash…

As you know, I am constantly perusing the drugstore aisles to find new things – one thing I have noticed recently is the advent of a new category in the drugstore “masstige” a mashup between prestige and mass market products. I have also noticed that most mass market products are steeeping their game up to compete with this new category.

One such discovery is Olay Total Effects 7-in-1 Advanced Anti-Aging Body Wash. One thing you have to know about me and my skin is that in the winter, I get super dry. Like flaky skin dry. It doesn’t help that I like to take scaldingly hot showers either (I now, I’m ridiculous…LOL). My skin is zapped from every ounce of moisture so I need all the help I can get! This bodywash not only helped me in the moisture department but the texture has improved as well. My skin was super soft all day with only a light/moderate lotion (no flakies!! I normally have to use cream or cocoabutter based creams) I used the Deep Penetrating Moisture version which has a slight musk scent which I don’t mind as it kinda goes with the fragrances that I like to wear. I don’t think it would overpower anything though (at least I haven’t noticed it). The exfoliating version moisturizes just as well, with the addition of some scrubby beads to help get rid of the dry skin. Win/Win for me!
