Skin…beautiful skin.  That’s the trend backstage at Creatures of the Wind, a Chicago based label that debuted in fall of 2008 and has gained steady ground ever since.  Chris Peters, one half of the design duo says, “We were inspired by a book from the 17th century called, The Secret Commonwealth: Of Elves, Fauns and Faires,” said designer Chris Peters. “The clothes all have an element of parallel existences – the real world versus the fairy world – manifesting itself in the combinations of fabrics and the idea of transformation and transition.”

The trend here is gorgeous, ethereal, radiant skin.  NARS lead artist James Boehmer said of the look, “The look is about ethereal, forest-wet skin,” said James Boehmer, who is also the Director of Global Artistry. “You can’t use enough moisturizer – it’s dewy and really radiant. The eye should be defined in its shape but worn-in with its effect. As if you can see the eyelid through it, which we get from the gloss.” LOVING IT!  It’s about time we saw looks that pay attention to skin and that new NARS tinted moisturizer is amazing.

The best trends that are coming down the runway are ones that you can assimilate into your life with little or no effort.  Case in point, this smokin’, understated look from Maybelline New York’s makeup artist Andy Koh.  This look is super easy to get at home and has more of a natural fresh skin feel than most runway looks.

“The makeup look at Vivienne Tam is inspired by the beauty of a Japanese zen garden,” said Maybelline New York Makeup Artist Andy Koh. “The skin is clean and natural, while the lashes are long and curled. Metallic eyes and lips give this look a modern 70s vibe.”

The Rundown:

• Fit Me! Foundation™: Andy used two different shades of this perfecting foundation to create flattering contours and angles. He used a light shade to focus on the T-zone area and a deeper shade around the outer edges of the face.
• Eye Studio Color Explosion Luminizing Eyeshadow™ in Forest Fury: Inspired by a 1970s metallic eye, Andy applied the gold and green shadows from this palette to the upper eyelid.
• Eye Studio Color Plush Silk Eyeshadow™ in Irresistible Ivy: Andy applied this palette’s copper shade to the upper crease. He also applied the copper shade to the outer corner of the lower lid to create a “glowy” effect.
• Volum’ Express The Falsies Waterproof Mascara™ in Black Drama: Andy used this dramatic mascara on top and bottom lashes to create long, thick, 70s-inspired eyelashes.

The beauty looks for Chado Ralph Rucci F/W 2011 consisted of a sophisticated smoky eye, coupled with a modern french twist. Tom Pecheux for MAC Cosmetics customized the dramatic eye to each model, using matte black eyeshadow, loads of mascara and liner inside the eye.

To highlight the eyes, the foundation was kept matte, along with little contour underneath the cheekbone and concealer on the lips. All products are from MAC Cosmetics:

• Cheeks: Invisible Powder
• Lips: Lip Conditioner with a bit of concealer

Laurent Philippon for Bumble and Bumble created a modern french twist, shying away from the traditional slick and taut twist to a soft, “slept-in” updo using a combination of styling products and few hairpins. Once he achieved the right hair texture with styling wax, he twisted the hair upwards, securing it with 5-6 bobby pins, then pulled out stray pieces in the front for the effortless-chic look.

The Alice + Olivia by Stacey Bendet Fall 2011 collection evokes timeless elegance and unabashed glamour, inspired by a modern day interpretation of the classic 1950s movie Auntie Mame. Stacey Bendet creates a wardrobe for a chic, free-spirited female; an empowered individual who is full of life, ready for a party, eccentric and captivating.

Polly Osmond for MAC Cosmetics created a 70s modern punk glam look, complete with the classic cat eye, red lips and “barely there” foundation.

All makeup products are by MAC:

Lead stylist Thomas Dunkin for Sebastian Professional created a romantic chignon to compliment the glamorous collection, which was teased into a large bun with twists in the front. He twisted very small, subtle sections on the sides and pulled the hair back into a large bun, securing it with hair bands and bobby pins that matched each model’s haircolor.

Dunkin used the following Sebastian Professional products:

• Shine Define – Ultimate Versatile Hairspray for Shine and Flexible Hold
• Shaper Zero Gravity – Dry, Brushable Lightweight Control Hairspray;

Sally Hansen created two unique nail polish shades that forecast the Fall nail colors for the season. Dana Caruso, Global Beauty Expert for Sally Hansen, used the Salon Effects Real Nail Polish Strips in “Autumn Violet” and “Liquid Metal” to complete the signature look.

This unique technology makes it easy to apply polish without the hassle of dry time or base/top coat. The nail strips will be available in the Fall.

A nod to the 90’s with Vena Cava was only complete with the help of hair guru, Ted Gibson, for Beauty.com and an innovative use of nail polish- Nonie Crème for butterLONDON.

Hair:

Channeling Christy Turlington’s 90’s grunge look, Ted Gibson created a laid back cool look to complete Vena Cava’s Fall 2011 Collection. To achieve this look, he dampened the hair with his Tame It Shine Lotion and Fix It Gel  then scrunched to create a carefree and casual appearance.

The Nails:

Thinking outside the box, Nonie Crème crafted “Finger Bands” for the Fall 2011 Vena Cava show. Nails left bare yet the fingers were painted with small colorful stripes to create a look that was out-of-the-box thinking that created the perfect 90’s grunge look!

Lead Stylist for the beauty inspiration, Sarah Lucero for Stila Cosmetics and Beauty.com channels Vintage Hollywood glam for the catwalk at Lela Rose.

Stila fashioned a bold lip and a soft eye to compliment Lela Rose’s Fall 2011 collection. The contemporary update on old school glam is feminine, sophisticated, and show-stopping both on and off the runway.

As one who is new to the bold lip, I love this look! This old school Hollywood Glam look is definitely one I will play with!   Is this a look that you would rock? If so, where?

The hair and nails were by Ted Gibson and Deborah Lippmann.  Ted’s team was led by NY based stylist Devin Toth who walked me through the hollywood glam with a ponytail twist look…..TG products were  beautiful hold hairspray and tame it shine lotion very sleek and beautiful (see video below for how to and inspiration)

While Deborah wasn’t there this season (neither was Ted, the grammys were that Sunday!)  I spoke with Jude Lippmann, Deborah’s husband about the polish used for the show.  Lela always uses nail color as part of the overall look and this season was no exception as she chose “Billionaire” a deep forest green that went beautifully with the rich colors and texture of the clothes.

Chevy Cruzearati: Fashion Unexpected

If you haven’t been following, over the last few months, I have been working on an amazing social media project with Chevrolet for the launch of their CHEVY CRUZE! They have chosen ME, The Curvy Fashionista as their Fashion Cruzearati to cover fashion from across the country!

My latest adventures took me to New York Fashion Week, in the freezing cold- but with TONS of Fashion!!!! My First adventure with Chevy took me to the studio of project Runway Alumni, Althea Harper! SUCH A SWEETHEART she is! I had the pleasure of visiting her studio, helping her pack her bags, load MY CRUZE, take her to her event space, go behind the scenes, and watch her entire collection come to life as I bring you Fashion Unexpected during Fall 2011 NEW YORK FASHION WEEK!

What I really admired and liked about Althea was her amazing DRIVE, Honesty, and OPENNESS about the plus size fashion community! YOU HEAR ME!?! Her OPENNESS and respect to the plus size fashionista and her desire to rock contemporary and body conscious fashionable pieces! Cause you know I ASKED HER ABOUT IT!

Before the glitz and glam that parades down the catwalk, designers come to the drawing board with distinguished hair and make-up teams to create the vision we see walk down the runway.

For Fall 2011, Christian Siriano’s vision was created with the help of MAC and Aveda. Below we talk to the lead  and key artists for their inspirations for the runway,  from natural beauty to black orchids.

MAC’s Beauty inspiration:

Inspired by “Gorgeous and Simple beauty” and “Minimal Beauty,” MAC went for a natural beauty- highlighting the model’s natural beauty with an emphasis on the eyebrow. Mauves, Gloss eyelids, and a matte stained lip defined the look for the runway.

The AVEDA direction:

Aveda’s Creative Director, Antoinette Beenders takes her inspiration, Black Orchids and shares she came to the look for the hair for Christian Siriano.  Taken from the petal of the Orchid, Beenders takes sleek braids, set with the Aveda Control Spray, then flatiron for texture, and then finger combed to deliver a “Smooth with a little bit of texture” look to enhance Siriano’s fall collection.

What is really cool about the breakdown of these looks is its achieve-ability for the beauty novice like myself! Taking cues form both lead artists, would you rock these looks?

20-year M.A.C. Artist extraordinaire Gordon Espinet was responsible for bringing to life a Brigitte Bardot-inspired look to the runway for designer Behnaz Sarafpour’s fall season reveals.

Espinet described the look as “luminous,” “skin care-y,”  “just left the spa.”  Avoid matte and overdone this fall.  Prep face with primer and concealer, then top with a light dusting of powder and contour the cheeks.  Espinet used an amazing palette of eye shadows, to be revealed this fall, including vanillas and beiges.

Use beige on outer half of the eye, dust a lighter color on the inner-eye, near tear duct.  Every woman should have M.A.C’s Wonder Woman Penultimate Eye Liner, in her make-up bag.  Line the top lid until you reach the end of the eye.   Top with a coat of black mascara on top and bottom.   Finish with M.A.C.’s Tanorama a platinum, beige lipstick which gives lips a light layer of shine.  The finished look is luminous, natural and showcases the skin, which is a grand departure from the matte looks of previous seasons.

Voila!
