Amidst all the glitz and glamor of the International Beauty Show and the International Esthetics, Cosmetics & Spa Conference, I found an up-and-coming brand of eco-friendly and organic nail polishes and removers, called Karma Organics! While the products are 100% organic, that doesn’t mean they’re just for the eco-friendly gals who love to paint their nails! The line, created by a husband and wife team from New Jersey, offers over 100 different colored polishes, as well as a top coat, base coat, strengthener, cuticle oil, cuticle remover and a nail bed healer that are all-natural and chemical free. In addition, the polishes are free of toluene, formaldehyde and DBP, making them great for everyone (including women who are pregnant)! The Karma Organics line is great for the environment, right down to the 100% recyclable glass bottles that the polishes come in! The coolest part of the line (at least to me) is that there are several glow-in-the-dark shades, which are marketed towards children, but I love anyways! (I mean, c’mon, who doesn’t love glow-in-the-dark?) Another advantage to this organic line is that because it’s chemical-free, the polish will actually last longer!

In addition to the polish line, Karma Organics also sells three different organic soy nail polish removers. The polish removers come in Unscented with Vitamin E, Tea Tree scented or Lavender scented (and let me tell you: they smell really good!) The polish removers are 100% biodegradable, 100% soy and corn-based, non-toxic and non-carcinogenic. They are also free of any petroleum ingredients or by-products and are derived from American produced farm crops. Like the nail polishes, the bottles are 100% recyclable including the label!

I left the booth with a bright pink shade of polish #330, “So Berry Sweet” which I polished my nails with last night. One stroke of the brush left a bright, opaque coat on my nails which I then covered with their top coat. My nails dried in five minutes flat and I didn’t smudge them! I’m a serial hand-washer and from what I’ve seen so far, this polish is showing zero signs of chipping any time soon!

I also got a bottle of the Karma Organics unscented polish remover with Vitamin E, which I used to remove my old coat of polish. The polish came off effortlessly (I’ve had to scrub hard with some acetone-based removers in the past) and left my nails looking clean and healthy!

Karma Organics was recently featured on WNBC Weekend Today in the “AskMelissa” segment as one of the Top 10 Lifestyle Picks for 2010! The brand has also been featured in some popular magazines, including O, The Oprah Magazine and Health and Allure, where it was chosen for the Allure Editor’s Choice Award! Karma Organics is currently only sold at the upscale women’s boutique Henri Bendel on Fifth Avenue in New York City. You can read more about Karma Organics products by visiting their website, or by visiting the Karma Organics Spa, located in Ridgewood, New Jersey.

I am always on the lookout for weightless feeling lip color that gives you a good dose of shine. While I was a big lipstick wearer in the 90′s……I usually blot, mix with gloss or skip lipstick altogether these days. I was very happy however, to see new, sheerer formulas pop up that give me the color I want without that lip-sticky feel. Stila’s latest, Stila Shine Lip Color SPF 20 is one of those. A perfect hybrid of lipstick and gloss with a super weightless feel.

This formula is smooth, sheer and has a lovely faint vanilla scent. It feels somewhat matte but looks shiny (I know….strange but good!) Available in 8 shades packed with healthy ingredients to beautify lips both inside and out. Vitamins A, C and E deliver maximum antioxidant protection, while rich vegetable-based oils provide lightweight moisturization for the softest, smoothest lips.

The Rundown:

anna (medium sheer antique rose)<—-LOVE this shade and have been wearing it daily!

charlotte (sheer coral)

chelsea (sheer baby pink)

pam (sheer rouge)

sarah (sheer peachy pink)

sonia (creamy rosy violet)

tina (coppery brown)

traci (medium sheer rosy brown)

As if the sheerness and the color weren’t enough, they go and throw SPF 20 in the mix. This would be perfect at the beach or just for everyday…as we all should be using some kind of SPF daily anyway. Right? Right?

Stay Pretty!!

Blotting papers are essential these days…they are the best way to remove oiliness without depositing anything back onto your skin. The worst thing in the world you can do is take that sponge from your powder, dab it on the powder and straight onto your oily face. That’s how you get that dreaded powder ring…you know the one that looks like a dark stain? Congratulations, you have just ruined your powder. So the answer is blotting papers, hands down. Some work better than others but these Tatcha Japanese Blotting Papers are brilliant. they are super thin and they contain 100% Abaca Leaf, Gold Flake. They are all-natural, biodegradable, suitable for all skin types, body, animal and planet friendly. Plus they are larger than the usual blotting papers, so if you normally use 2 or more then you will certainly only need one of these. They are packaged in these lovely slim packs with pretty artwork. They are also fragrance free, handmade (don’t see too much of that these days) and won’t disturb your makeup

The Rundown:

Skin Health Removes excess oil that can lead to clogged pores and breakouts. Minimizes the need for harsh complexion treatment products such as oil control gels, chemicals, primers and powders that can coat and stress skin out.

Natural Look Lovers Allows skin’s natural luminosity to shine through by eliminating the need for full face powder. Ideal for delicate skin types.

Makeup Lovers Helps to create a perfect canvas for makeup. Helps to keep make-up looking fresh throughout the day, reducing the need for touch ups.

One pack contains 30 sheets ($12) or you can get 90 sheets ($30) at tatcha.com.

Formulated with absolutely no silicones, it comtains naturally derived ingredients such as marshmallow root, ferula, horseradish, and garlic extracts that coat and straighten hair without any chemical action.

What it is formulated WITHOUT:

- Parabens

- Sulfates

- Synthetic Fragrances

- Synthetic Dyes

- Petro-Chemicals

- Phthalates

My hair is super fine and this has never weighed it down at all PLUS I like the fact that the actual de-frizzing is accomplished without heavy silicones which work fine but tend to make my hair look a bit greasy over time.

Get yours at Sephora stores nationwide and sephora.com.

Now that the weather is getting warmer and we will be spending more time outside, you may be concerned about certain areas on your face (like acne scarring or dark spots). Brightening products have become very popular as of late and one of my favorites is Aveda’s Enbrightenment. Not only because it’s good for your skin but it’s good for the planet too. Enbrightenment helps get rid of dark spots, rids your skin of discoloration, and helps to improve skin’s clarity in one fell swoop. 100% naturally derived, it has the patented Aveda Pure-Fume aroma blend of botanicals to soothe and calm your skin (plus it smells good too!).

The collection offers to deliver “a more even skin tone, protection against environmental aggressors…and a luminous, clear complexion” with all parts containing ascorbyl glucoside (vitamin C), glucosamine, brown algae, naturally-derived salicyclic acid, and organic shea butter. All of which are great for brightening the skin and soothing irritation simultaneously. I have been using the kit for the past 6 weeks and have managed to rid myself of a bithersome acne scar that was on my chin! (Score!!)

Up to 99.7% of the ingredients in each of the products is naturally derived, and the packaging for the serum, lotion, and cream are 100% PCR PET (Post-Consumer Recycled Polyethylene Terephalate), indicating that a significantly smaller carbon footprint is left from each bottle.

Described as “wearable treatment”, I have been using this recently, you can use it for blow dryed straightened looks and curly looks as well. For curls, I find that it gives a very airy light look which is almost unattainable for me with other products. This is super lightweight, and my hair is superfine so it doesn’t weigh my hair down.

Stay Pretty!!
