My gorgeous fairy blogmother Tia Williams of the iconic blog Shake Your Beauty and her sisters are on a roll.  Not only are they already fabulous in their own careers (entertainment lawyer, editrix and beauty diva) they have now launched a varitable Daily Candy for hair salons, called The Fly Cut.  It is a personal referral service on a grand scale, with a renowned beauty guru at its helm to vet and recruit the best salons.

Tia is  the go to in the beauty biz.  She was one of the first blogs I ever read before TMG was conceived.  This new venture is particularly fabulous, you can consider the Williams sisters “hair-salon matchmakers.” the idea was birthed during a conversation about the question that haunts all women of color — “where do you get your hair done?” — The Fly Cut (TFC) makes it possible for consumers to experience 5-star salon services without paying full price. Genius! The Fly Cut is the first and only daily deal website selling discounted vouchers to hair salons specializing in African-American and ethnic hair. The sisters, former beauty editor (Elle, Glamour, Lucky, Teen People, Essence) and best selling author (It Chicks, The Color Of Beauty) Tia Williams, corporate entertainment lawyer Devon Williams, and veteran online editor Lauren Williams, are offering a guide to each woman on a guest to find a salon fitting her specific hair needs: an inexpensive blow-out (Dominicana steelo), a flawless weave (ahem Beyonce), highlights that won’t cause damage, the perfect precision cut or the stylist to aid in the transition from relaxed to natural- the list goes on!

We finally made it! The most glamourous awards show of the year, the Oscars! Just as we expected, we saw some gorgeous gowns and amazing hairstyles. While we can’t help you score a vintage Dior dress, we have great tips to get your hair looking red-carpet ready. Wella Professionals was responsible for some of the best looks of the night, and now their celebrity stylists are sharing their tips on how they created these hot Hollywood hairstyles.

Michelle Williams
Michelle’s pixie is very modern and sophisticated chic. The hair has just enough texture to make the look sweet, yet edgy.

To Get The Look: First, start by applying Sebastian Professional Mousse Forte to wet hair, then allow it to air dry. With a small round brush, finish off with a blow dry that gives the hair more height, then use your hands to set the part and bangs. Finish the look with Wella Professionals Stay Essential Finishing Spray to set in place.

Penelope Cruz
The actress showed off very old Hollywood glamour, channeling the 1950s Grace Kelly finger waves that perfectly complemented her Armani Privé gown.

To Get The Look: Start with dry hair and use a small amount of Wella Professionals Natural Volume Styling Mousse at the roots. Set hair in steam hot rollers by rolling hair straight back from the head. This will give hair extra texture and curl. Use smaller rollers at the back of the head to create a tighter curl, and then pin hair underneath into a faux bob. Lightly mist with Wella Professionals Dynamic Fix 45 Second Crafting Spray, then back comb and tease at the root. Brush out the finger waves into place and set with Wella Professionals Stay Essential Finishing Spray.

Leslie Mann
Stylist Rod Ortega decided to give Leslie a ponytail for a more youthful look that made for a fun contrast to her elegant, sequin-detailed dress. The high ponytail also works well for her face shape, creating a beautiful silhouette.

To Get The Look: Start out by prepping wet hair with Wella Professionals Velvet Amplifier to prime hair for a smooth blowout. Use a small amount of Wella Professionals Mirror Polish Shine Serum on the ends of the hair for added smoothness and shine. Blow out with a round brush at the roots for texture and use a Mason Pearson paddle brush to blow dry from mid-length to the ends. Back comb for extra volume, especially at the roots, and use a flat brush from mid-length to ends again so there is texture, but not curl. Then leave the front and sides of the hair out, pull the rest of the hair into a ponytail near the top of the back of the head. Smooth the hair left out of the ponytail back and wrap around the elastic to hide the band. Spray the style with Wella Professionals Stay Essential Finishing Spray to hold in place while leaving it with lots of natural movement.

Olivia Wilde
Stylist Davy Newkirk and Olivia opted to go for a chic 70′s inspired updo to complement her strapless Gucci gown that she wore to the 2012 Vanity Fair Oscar Party. The roughed up, simplistic yet super chic updo gave her a timeless and effortlessly beautiful look.

To Get The Look: First, apply Wella Professionals Pearl Styler to wet hair and rough dry it, using your hand and a blow dryer. This will give hair extra texture before styling. Next, gather hair at the crown of the head and secure with a bungee cord. You can tease the ends to rough it up a bit more, for added edgy texture. Loosely twisted the hair around the bungee for a loose structure and secure with bobby pins and hair pins. To finish, spray the hair with Wella Professionals Dynamic Fix hairspray, and rough up the hair with fingers at the root and around the bun, spraying once again with the Dynamic Fix to add sheen and hold the look for the night.

Nina DoBrev
Celebrity stylist Riawna Capri gave Nina a youthful looking fishtail ponytail that is easier to create at home than you think.

To Get The Look: First, spray Wella Professionals Ocean Spritz all over and scrunch hair for a nice beachy texture. Loosely gather the hair into a slightly messy ponytail with a center part. Then, begin your fishtail braid. Once done, pull a couple pieces out to create a more distressed look and finish with a shine spray, such as Wella Professionals Shimmer Delight all over for a polished finish.

During tonight’s 84th annual Academy Awards, Kristen Wiig, a first-time nominee for “Original Screenplay” for Bridesmaids, stole the style spotlight. Below, Dove Celebrity Stylist Mark Townsend shares his tips for women looking to achieve her red carpet look at home. Mark used products from the NEW Dove Style+Care collection that nourish and protect hair for long-lasting style. The products are officially available nationwide March 1st.

“I was in love with Kristen’s J. Mendel dress as soon as I saw it; I was so inspired by the silhouette and color. We wanted Kristen’s hair to be full with voluminous waves and have an edgy and sexy texture”

The Rundown:

- “I started by applying a large dollop of Dove Style+Care Nourishing Curls Whipped Cream Mousseand blow dried the hair with a round brush.

- I then took 3-inch sections of hair and sprayed each section with Dove Style+Care Thermal Replenishment Spray and then wrapped the hair around a 1 1/2 inch FHI Heat curling iron.

- When all of her hair had been curled, I took a small amount of Dove Style+Care Frizz-Free Shine Cream-Serum in my hands and rubbed them together and then I raked the product through the hair to break up the curls and give the hair shine and definition. I’m beyond obsessed with this product. It gives you the nourishment of a cream and the shine of a serum in one bottle!

- I finished her look by spraying Dove Style+Care Strength & Shine Extra Hold Hairspray all over while scrunching the hair with my fingers; this will ensure that the hair is in place all night and give the hair great sexy waves.”

Fresh-faced ingénue Shailene Woodley from the Oscars nominated film “The Descendents” has made quite the impression this awards season with her breezy fashion choices, barely-there makeup and minimalist style. But for the Oscars, the ultimate red carpet gala, she has upped the glamour quotient like never before. Makeup artist Stephen Sollitto used products by Hourglass Cosmetics to create a suitably polished look that complemented the actress’s chic updo and elegant Valentino gown, and evoked big-time allure.

“Today is a special day for Shailene and so I wanted to use a little more makeup than what she typically wears,” says Stephen. “Her look is about luminous skin, defined eyes and a sophisticated palette of coppers and bronzes. She looked exquisite yet still young, fresh and fashionable.”

 The Rundown:

Skin: Stephen began by prepping Shailene’s skin with Hourglass’s best-selling Veil Mineral Primer to create a smooth canvas for makeup and ensure a flawless finish with real longevity. He followed with Hourglass Illusion Tinted Moisturizer in Shell, which imbues skin with luminosity, and Hidden Corrective Concealer in Fair, an undetectable cover-up.

Cheeks: To add warmth, he contoured Shailene’s cheekbones with Hourglass Superficial Waterproof Bronzer, a silky powder that withstands high humidity, sweeping the product to her temples, hair line, nose and chin. He then applied a dusty rose blush and finished with the highlighter from Hourglass Illume Crème-to-Powder Bronzer Duo in Bronze Light for a gorgeous glow.

Eyes: Stephen lined her eyes with Hourglass Calligraphy Liquid Eye Liner in Cognac, a rich brown shade. Before adding eye shadow, Stephen applied Hourglass Film Noir Full Spectrum Mascara to gauge the darkness of her eyes. He also swept Hourglass Film Noir Lash Lacquer at the roots of the lashes for drama, thickness and inky black sheen. Stephen then covered the entire lid of the eye with the cream shimmer shade of Hourglass Visionaire Eye Shadow Duo in Suede to reflect light. Last, he applied the copper shade from Hourglass Visionaire Eye Shadow Duo in Gypsy for a dose of dramatic color.

Lips: Stephen lined the lips with Hourglass Trace Lip Liner in Bare, and followed with Hourglass Prodigy Hydrating Lip Gloss in Eden for a peachy beige sheen.

HAIR

STYLIST: Campbell McAuley for MATRIX

INSPIRATION: To compliment her Valentino Couture gown, stylist Campbell McAuley wanted to give Shailene a simple, glamorous hairstyle that would really pop. The high neckline and pattern of the fabric inspired a 70’s style textured chignon with a Moroccan twist. The wrapped pieces of the chignon were intended to mirror the textures of the dress.

STEP-BY-STEP:

• Starting with wet hair, applied MATRIX Total Results Amplify Wonder Boost Root Lifter to give the base of the hair volume
• Blowdried hair with a round brush to smooth the texture
• Set hair in Velcro rollers for one hour
• Removed rollers, brushed out curls and worked MATRIX Total Results Sleek Silk Wonder Smoothing Oil from roots to end for shine
• Gathered all hair into a textured ponytail at the crown of the head
• Twisted small sections of the ponytail and wrapped them up to the base of the hair to make a round shape
• Half way through, wrapped remaining sections around the round shape to give it a criss-cross texture
• Finished with MATRIX Design Pulse Hard Lock Hairspray to hold the style in place

Actress Rose Byrne’s black, backless Vivienne Westwood gown was complimented by a sleek, stylish bob. Her stylist, John Frieda International Creative Consultant Harry Josh, wanted to keep the hair simple, clean and chic. “We wanted it to be all about shine and a high-gloss finish,” says Josh.  i am LOVING this retro look…it screams 80′s Michelle Pfeiffer from Scarface.

Step 1 – Protect and Prep

Hollywood’s “Night of Nights” is right around the corner, and while we don’t know who will take home the oh-so-coveted Oscar Awards, we do know that all you beauty junkies out there will be mentally casting your vote for Oscar superlatives – who has the best dress, the best accessories and of course… who has the best hair?

We spoke with the pros at Wella Professionals, the hair brand who has a very impressive roster of red carpet hair under their belt already from this season, including Madonna, Michelle Williams, Claire Danes, Emma Stone, Zoe Saldana, Emily Blunt and Shailene Woodley, to get the inside scoop on what hair looks will heat up the red carpet this Sunday.

“We will see a peak in fluid textures and warm tones that suggest effortless elegance and healthy, shiny hair that shows a lot of movement and bounce,” states Wella Professionals Color Ambassador Aura Friedman. “Expensive and Luxurious are words you could use to explain this look – maximize this effect by asking your colorist to use Wella Professionals Haircolor to give you a soft shade with warm undertones that will best complement your skin tone.”

It’s always a pleasure to see what Ted Gibson comes up with for Lela Rose, a show that he does every season.  Ted always works so well with Rose and it shows. This look can easily be achieved at home and anything where you can braid or twist your hair easily is a thumbs up in my book.

The architectural, 40s looking hair was inspired by “the new gibson girl”. Ted says, ““We’ve created something that I think is really something that a girl can do at home. It’s kind of like the new answer to the braid. The twist is the new braid.”

To create the style, Ted began by blow drying the hair using build it blow drying spray for volume, then swept all the hair to one side. Secure the hair with an elastic about five or six inches from the scalp, then twist the hair into itself and pin. Finish with beautiful hold.  This is something I can do at home – gonna give this one a whirl for sure!
