Summer 2012: NARS Makeup Collection…

Summer is nearly here (at least the summer collections are!!) This is one of the first to hit my desk and I love the bronzey, apricot, grape and plum of it all. The Summer 2012 campaign was designed and photographed by NARS Founder and Creative Director François Nars. Once again, the inimitable Ginta Lapina personifies the look you see here.

To begin, St. Moritz Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer SPF30/PA+++ was applied to the center of the face with the fingertips and blended outward, then set with Eden Loose Powder to create an immaculate complexion. To lend the skin a light bronzed look, Laguna Bronzer was dusted onto the face in the shape of a ‘3’, starting at the forehead, swept on to the cheek, and then along the jawline. The apples of the cheeks were warmed with Liberté Blush and the face further defined by softly dusting Taos Blush along the hairline.

A mixture of the silver and icy peach shades of Ramatuelle Trio Eyeshadow were brushed onto the lid and blended up into the crease. The apricot shade of the Trio was added in to the crease, with the silver shade swept along the lower lash line. The upper and lower lids were lined with Via Veneto Larger Than Life® Long-Wear Eyeliner. After curling the lashes with an eyelash curler, two coats of Larger Than Life Volumizing Mascara were brushed on to the lashes.

Finally, the lips were lined and filled with Borneo Lip Liner Pencil—blending with a finger to soften the color. Moscow Pure Matte Lipstick was applied, then topped with Risky Business Lip Gloss for shine.

NARS + Mad Men = Awesome….

Did you watch Mad Men this past Sunday night?? Guess what….all the makeup looks were from NARS! Can’t beat that, right?? Lana Horochowski, Department Head of Makeup for Mad Men, used NARS to help bring the 1960s to the small screen for Sunday’s season premiere. “We looked at a lot of ‘60s magazines, and photos from my mother when she was young,” Horochowski said. “Overall, there are definitely a lot of makeup looks this season. It’s a new color palette entirely!”

Megan Draper (Jessica Paré) “The inspiration for Megan Draper drew from a combination of Twiggy and Sophia Loren,” explains Horochowski. “We thought of French and Italian actresses who had iconic looks. Megan is a little more high fashion in her approach to makeup compared to the other girls because she’s a lot younger – their makeup stays pretty consistent.”

Party look: “It was so mod – we used Heart of Glass Eyeshadow, a pale blue shade, not too shimmery, with Thunderball Eyeshadow in the crease, which was drawn in a thick line, smudged slightly, but left heavy enough to be very mod. Like Twiggy. I lined her eyes with the Nuits Blanches Eyeliner Stylo. I used Desire Blush on her cheeks, and Belle de Jour Velvet Matte Lip Pencil on her lips.”

Office look: “She’s very basic in the office – very little foundation, a little black eyeliner, and Dolce Vita Velvet Matte Lip Pencil every day. I also love to use Madrague Duo Eyeshadow. In the first scene in the office, she’s wearing Lili Marlene Cream Eyeshadow on the eyelid with Nuits Blanches Eyeliner Stylo applied in a thick black line.”

 Joan Harris (Christina Hendricks)
“You don’t see her in the office too much in the first episode – she’s at her apartment where she’s not wearing much makeup. Just a swipe of Dolce Vita Blush; and on her lips we like to apply Pop Life Velvet Matte Lip Pencil but blotted down to a stain, or Dolce Vita Velvet Matte Lip Pencil.”

TMG Faves: NARS on Bleecker Street NYC…

I had the opportunity to attend a private cocktail party and dinner for one of my all time FAVORITE beauty brands NARS during fashion week. This was for the one year anniversary of the boutique, which is the flagship store in the West Village. If you haven’t been there, I would suggest you swing by the next time you are in NYC. The NARS Flagship Store is right in the heart of the West Village on Bleecker Street and in addition to having some items you can only find there, there are also little touches by Francois Nars himself (like the bookcase with his favorite videos and books). Red Carpet Beauty: Gwyneth Paltrow at the 84th Academy Awards…

NARS worked with celebrity makeup artist Leslie Lopez to create presenter Gwyneth Paltrow’s red carpet look at the 84^th annual Academy Awards! Paltrow looked radiant in Tom Ford dress complete with a cape to keep her warm on what proved to be a chilly night in Los Angeles….

“It’s elegantly bronzed,” said celebrity makeup artist Leslie Lopez for NARS Cosmetics about the red carpet look she created for Gwyneth Paltrow. “The dress makes such a statement, but it also has no color, so we needed to create a makeup look that complemented the dress and was still sophisticated enough for the red carpet. I really loved the Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer because it gives a sun-kissed look to her skin, and perfect against a white dress!”

NYFW: Get The Look – NARS Fabiola Arias A/W 2012…

More beautiful skin and this time, the addition of rich…ombre eyes. NARS is slaying it again during this fashion week this time at the Fabiola Arias show. “All the pieces are strong but not overbearing,” said designer Fabiola Arias. “I wanted the girls to look like they are really lit from within, in gorgeous dresses and hats that my mother, a milliner, created.”
NARS international lead artist Uzo created the look. “Fabiola wanted a look that was strong, but sophisticated at the same time,” said Uzo, NARS International Lead Makeup Artist. “We created a very rich, ombre eye with warm shades complemented by gold tones. The inner corners of the eyes are meant to look like they are illuminated, and to balance the look, the lips have color but are tinted rather than full-on.” I love the fact that even though the focus is on eyes here, we are still seeing a lot of dewy skin so far which I predict will be one of the biggest trends in makeup this year.

NYFW: Get The Look – NARS Creatures of the Wind A/W 2012…

Skin…beautiful skin. That’s the trend backstage at Creatures of the Wind, a Chicago based label that debuted in fall of 2008 and has gained steady ground ever since. Chris Peters, one half of the design duo says, “We were inspired by a book from the 17th century called, The Secret Commonwealth: Of Elves, Fauns and Faires,” said designer Chris Peters. “The clothes all have an element of parallel existences – the real world versus the fairy world – manifesting itself in the combinations of fabrics and the idea of transformation and transition.”

The trend here is gorgeous, ethereal, radiant skin. NARS lead artist James Boehmer said of the look, “The look is about ethereal, forest-wet skin,” said James Boehmer, who is also the Director of Global Artistry. “You can’t use enough moisturizer – it’s dewy and really radiant. The eye should be defined in its shape but worn-in with its effect. As if you can see the eyelid through it, which we get from the gloss.” LOVING IT! It’s about time we saw looks that pay attention to skin and that new NARS tinted moisturizer is amazing.

If you are like me, and you like a natural look when it comes to your makeup…listen up! One of my favorite brands NARS has something new for you!! NARS founder and creative director François Nars is famous for his no-rules approach to makeup application. But when it comes to what lies beneath, his philosophy is clear: Skin should shine through makeup. I am in agreement with this statement 100%. The older I get, the less I want things looking matte or cakey. This isn’t to say that I don’t get rid of shine with blotting papers, I just like my skin to look like skin instead of makeup!

To that end, NARS Cosmetics went about creating a tinted moisturizer unlike any other — a complexion-perfecting fluid with anti-aging and skin-brightening benefits. NARS worked with Evan Rachel Wood at the 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards, who is nominated for Mildred Pierce.

The Rundown:

Inspiration:

“Sometimes the stars just align (pun intended) and tonight with nominee Evan Rachel Wood, her look came together so organically. Of course with a Gucci Premiere gown such as hers, it was all about the dress so we wanted to keep the make up clean and soft.

When I saw the new NARS Spring collection, it was as if the products were created specifically for this look! We had so much fun getting ready for the big day. We rocked out to some of our favorite tunes (Lykke Li), ate some yummy snacks (cookies of course) and most importantly laughed!”

The Look:

Paramaribo Duo Eyeshadow (new for Spring 2012) was the exact gilded gold and bronze we wanted to create a soft metallic eye that would pick up the accent of the feathers. Then we used Almay One Coat Nourishing Mascara on the lashes to finish the eye (ok maybe more than one coat!).

To keep the rest of the face feminine, the new NARS Gaiety Blush (new for Spring 2012) was amazing for a sheer flush of pink on the cheek along with a swipe of good-old standby NARS Angelika Blush to add a bit of shimmer.

NARS Sex Machine Velvet Matte Lip Pencil topped off with Como Larger Than Life Lip Gloss gave Evan a soft mauve pink lip to complete the look.

Red Carpet Beauty: Piper Perabo wears NARS at the 2012 Golden Globe Awards…

Y’all know I LOVE anything NARS, right? Well here is the first makeup look breakdown of the night, This one is for Piper Perabo, makeup by Troy Surratt for NARS Cosmetics.

The Rundown:

Inspiration:

“The look is very ethereal. It’s dewy and glowing with a gorgeous sparkly pink lip, which was the perfect look to complement her bold dress. For me, it was a classic approach with a subtle balance of attention paid to all points of the face.”

The Look:

We started with Cle de Peau La Crème to prep her skin as it’s something she uses on the show and day to day. Her foundation was NARS Sheer Glow Foundation with Cle de Peau Concealer to cover any imperfections.

On her eyes, we dusted the shimmery icy pink side of Douce France Trio Eyeshadow (new for Spring 2012). We created a thin, barely-there line of black along her entire lashline using the Nuits Blanches Eyeliner Stylo. To get the precision, we placed the Push Eyeliner Brush to the ink of the stylo, and applied a thin line from the inner corner to the outer corner, growing slightly thicker at the outer corner, but not extending past the corner. We used Larger Than Life Lengthening Mascara on her lashes for definition. Brows were filled in with Jodhpur Eyebrow Pencil to make them appear more dense. To set the pencil, I applied Shiseido Translucent Brow Shaper.

On the apples of her cheeks, using a Yachiyo Kabuki Artisan Brush, we created warmth with Gilda Blush. It was the perfect blush shade at the intersection of peach meets pink without any shimmer.

We created a pinky-beige lip by first lightly defining with Rosebud Lipliner Pencil, filling in with with Frivolous Velvet Gloss Lip Pencil, and applying Baby Doll Lip Lacquer just to the center of the lips. This creates a light-reflecting affect for a fuller pout on the red carpet.

Spring 2012: NARS Color Collection + Makeup Removing Water…

What’s up my babies!?? I know…long time no hear but things have been VERY busy over here at TMG HQ. (If you follow me on twitter you know whats up!!) AND….now that the holidaze are OVER…..what better way to jump back in than to share with you some spring goodness!! It SNOWED today for the first time and when I saw this collection I just melted. NARS Spring 2012 is a mix of berries, blues, warmth and brights – perfect for getting your mind of the winter blahs. In addition, two New York Fashion Week backstage STAPLES are now available – Makeup Remover Water & Oil Free eye makeup remover!!

The Spring 2012 Collection, created by Founder and Creative Director François Nars, stars a mix of bright and playful colors balanced with rich, saturated hues. Nars chose to photograph model Ginta Lapina for the spring campaign, explaining, “Her delicate features and classic beauty made her an ideal fit for a collection that’s at once fresh and fierce.”

To achieve the makeup look in the campaign image, Ginta’s skin was made radiant with Santa Fe Sheer Glow Foundation and set with Eden Loose Powder to create an Immaculate Complexion. Next, Zen Blush was applied to the hollow of the cheek and blended toward the temple for contour; Gaiety Blush was brushed onto the apple of the cheeks for a pop of color.

After prepping with Pro Prime Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base, Lhasa Single Eyeshadow was blended onto Ginta’s lids, extending the color to the upper inner corner of the eye. Her brow bone was highlighted with Albatross Highlighting Blush before Dark Rite Soft Touch Shadow Pencil was swiped across the upper lash line. It was further defined with Rue Saint-Honoré Larger Than Life Long-Wear Eyeliner; a winged effect was created in the outer corner. The lower lash was lined with the same pencil and gently smudged. Brows were defined with Blondie Single Eyeshadow; lashes were curled, then brushed with two coats of Larger Than Life Lengthening Mascara. Lips were lined and filled in with Amazon Lipliner Pencil, then topped with Valparaíso Pure Matte Lipstick and Misbehave Lip Gloss for shine. The look was completed with Écume Nail Polish on the nails.

The Rundown:

Douce France Trio Eyeshadow (Limited Edition) [$45] Named for the 1942 song by French singer-songwriter Charles Trenet. The Trio Eyeshadow features three gorgeous pink shades—shimmery icy pink, shimmery rose-petal pink and matte deep rose—that can be mixed to create a range of looks, from delicate and innocent to bold and sophisticated. Wear each alone or use one as a base, another to highlight and the third as a liner or contour.
Lhasa Single Eyeshadow [$24] One of the highest cities in the world, Lhasa is the home to many significant Tibetan Buddhist palaces. This shimmery lavender-gray Single Eyeshadow lends lids a luminous look worthy of its spiritual namesake.
Paramaribo Duo Eyeshadow (Limited Edition) [$34] The capital and largest city of Surinam, a tropical state in South America, was the inspiration for this Duo Eyeshadow, with its metallic shades of brass and bronze. Wear each solo, or use one as a base and the other as an accent or highlight for a richly burnished effect.
Gaiety Blush [$28] A bright candy-pink Blush that’s as cheerful as the state of joyful exuberance for which it’s named.
Mexican Rose Velvet Gloss Lip Pencil [$24] Just like its namesake flower, known for its long-lasting pink blooms, this hot-pink Velvet Gloss Lip Pencil leaves lips soft and gorgeously glossy thanks to moisture-rich hyaluronic spheres, which make pouts appear plumper.
Valparaíso Pure Matte Lipstick [$25] The Chilean city is becoming increasingly known as the country’s cultural capital. The rich raspberry Pure Matte Lipstick delivers long-wearing color with a comfortable finish.
Bilbao Lipstick [$24] A smooth and super-conditioning Lipstick in a shimmering topaz named for the Basque region of Spain, which has been revitalized by the Frank Gehry–designed Guggenheim Museum.
Dark Rite Soft Touch Shadow Pencil [$24] The navy blue Soft Touch Shadow Pencil complements any warm-weather look. Use the creamy, long-wearing formula alone, as a base for layering with powder shadow, or to line and sculpt the eye.
Diamond Life Nail Polish (Limited Edition) [$18] Sade’s 1984 debut album inspired this metallic violet Nail Polish. “Smooth Operator” indeed.
