How can you miss reality star turned supermogul Bethenny Frankel? First she was an author making her mark in the publishing industry with several popular self help books. Then when she started making her self described skinnygirl margarita on the BRAVO TV reality series The Real Housewives of New York City…EVERYONE wanted one (the recipe is still my margarita of choice). Then the unthinkable…she quit the show. Just as everyone counted Ms. Frankel out, she launched the Skinnygirl brand of pre-mixed margaritas for a mere $14.95 per bottle (I mean, come on…a cocktail in NYC is $14) and got her own deal with BRAVO to do a show. The bottles of Skinnygirl margarita were so popular that there were distribution problems at one point. She developed more versions (a white cranberry cosmo and sangria) all with the same natural low calorie approach. Then she eventually sold the brand to Fortune Brands Inc.’s Beam Global for an estimated $120 million making her one of the most profitable reality stars in TV history. Thats a lot to do in a few years right???

Well, Bethenny is now setting her sites on personal care. With a growing empire of videos, supplements and even a cleanse it only makes sense that she would foray into the world of beauty. Red Carpet Beauty: Tina Fey’s Look by Votre Vu at the 2012 Sag Awards…

It girl Tina Fey who was nominated for Best Actress in a Comedy. She sparkled on the red carpet and Gita Bass for Votre Vu created her classic look at the 2012 SAG Awards tonight, using Votre Vu Skincare and Makeup. This brand is an absolute favorite of mine (LOVE the dry spray oil!!) and Tina looks amazing!

“We were inspired by Tina’s black strapless Versace gown. We wanted her look to be equally classic and sexy,” says Gita.

The Rundown:

Gita started by spritzing the face with Votre Vu Amour D’Ore Multi-Vitamin Oil for Face, Body and Hair. “It adds long-lasting hydration, primes for makeup and gives the complexion a gorgeous glow,” she says. Next, she applied Votre Vu Tragic Magic Rescue Creme to soothe and eliminate any redness.

TMG Faves: Arcona Toner Tea Cleansing Bar…

Finding a great cleanser that doesn’t overly dry or overly moisturize combination skin can be somewhat of a challenge. I was hanging with my friend Nadine Jolie last year when she let me use a bit of what she called, “The best thing ever.” she broke off a small piece and I lathered it onto my trusty Clarisonic brush. If you are not familiar with the Los Angeles based brand Arcona (which has been around since 1989) they have a little history here. The cleanser Nadine gave me was Arcona’s Toner Tea Bar and I love it for several reasons.

Portable – it comes in it’s own case so you can travel with it.
Slightly clarifying with antibacterial properties – great if you have trouble or hormonal skin (mine is crazy and hormonal as I am breaking out nearly once a month. Menopause maybe?? Who knows but this is helping).
Slightly moisturizing – so you don’t dry out, Arcona has added manuka honey, vitamin E.
Slightly soothing – to calm those crazy acne areas, they added Lecithin, yucca and aloe.

All of these things rolled together and you have a pretty crazy kick butt facial cleanser. Also, I must mention that it seems to be hard milled like those european soaps because this lasts FOREVER and for $38 if that bar lasts you even 6 months (mine has lasted longer) that breaks down to $6.33 per month. Cost effective AND skin effective!! A must have for combo skin.

TMG Faves: Meaningful Beauty Crème de Serum…

I am not usually one for infomercials or gimicky products but looking at Cindy Crawford you can tell that she definitely takes care of her skin. She is aging very well and she claims its all because of her skincare line Meaningful Beauty and the rare french melon extract that her dermatologist Dr. Jean Louis Sebagh has developed and put into the formulation. Well I haven’t tried the entire line but, I have been using the latest addition Crème de Serum for the past 6 weeks.

This new restorative treatment combines the power of a serum with the rich, moisturizing effects of a crème – working together to combat the signs of aging. Using highly advanced technology, the active ingredients found in the Crème de Serum are suspended separately until the moment they are released: the orange swirl provides protection with a superoxide dismutase (SOD) from rare French melon, the white swirl contains anti-aging peptides to minimize the appearance of fine lines & the clear gel features Hyaluronic Acid to hydrate and plump the skin. Together, these ingredients work to deliver fresh, dewy skin desired by women of all ages.

After the 6 weeks, my skin is hydrated, soft and supple. Definitely noticed a difference in the texture of my skin as well. As far a wrinkle relieving benefits….I can only assume that those will be more visible over time. The bottom line is that my skin felt great and I noticed a difference after about 24-48 hours. Great, right? Not too shabby for a product you can get on TV! Now onto the texture…this serum is more like a gel cream than anything. but that’s what I like about it. It feels substantial on the skin (I even went without moisturizer one day and I was fine and you KNOW how dry my skin can get!). Use this sparingly because a little bit goes a long way and I can honestly say this is one of the best serums I have tried recently. I can see this being good for any skin type too, because it’s not too heavy and not too thin.

The serum is a triple colored swirl that has meaning – The orange swirl is the formula that is basically the concentrated melon extract to help provide protection with a super antioxidant. The white swirl has anti-aging peptides and the clear gel is hyaluronic acid which helps hold in moisture. A pretty good mix if you ask me – like a triple threat!!

Holiday Edition: Common Skincare Mistakes (and Problems) Solved by Dr. Heather Woolery Lloyd!!

When you are running around during the holidays, stress, extra makeup and lack of sleep can leave your skin in less than perfect shape. Dermatologist Dr. Heather Woolery-Lloyd who is an internationally recognized expert in skin of color. She has lectured at national and international conferences on the cosmetic concerns of skin of color. Dr. Woolery-Lloyd also writes a blog on multi-hued skin tones called thedermablog.com . She has some GREAT solutions for common skincare problems and mistakes – check it out…

AN EMBARRASSING PIMPLE FLARE UP (Rudolph Style) Tis the season for holiday STRESS…and hence a time where we may be a bit more prone to pimple flare ups (which is not the best thing when we have so many parties, photo ops, etc.. on the calendar!) – What’s a girl to do when with a Rudolf-style flare up?

Solution: Dr. Heather Woolery Lloyd says…you can spot treat with OTC acne treatments that contain benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. For big pimples, you can see your dermatologist for a quick injection. Most dermatologists will squeeze you into the schedule last minute for an injection of cortisone which decreases inflammation. This can cost anywhere from $25-$100 depending on where you live but it may be well worth it to stop a pimple before a big holiday event.

A CASE OF SANTA CHEEKS (except not as Jolly) Santa cheeks (aka extreme red cheeks) can sometimes be caused by 1) rosacea or 2) cold weather wind damage. Antioxidant based solutions can help with rosacea (which is a common skin inflammation condition) and heavy duty moisturizing can help with cold weather issues (see holiday glowing tips below)

Solution: Dr. Heather Woolery Lloyd says…Antioxidants that reduce inflammation are extremely helpful for red rosy cheeks. Look for ingredients like green tea which can reduce redness.(Ex. Replenix Green Tea Serum) Keep in mind, products with natural ingredients like licorice and green tea usually have a yellow or brown color. This is actually a good trick to know that there are therapeutic levels of these natural ingredients.

THE ANTI-BEAUTY SLEEP With the busy holiday season (shopping, holiday parties, etc…) It’s easy to forget about basic skin care 101 rules and skip a night of cleaning makeup off before bed. Leaving makeup on at night can lead to significant acne breakouts – the ultimate anti-beauty sleep mistake. This one mistake can actually lead to clogged pores and pimples.

Solution: Use a wipe such as the Specific Beauty Exfoliating Cleansing Cloths if you are tired – these cloths are a quick and easy solution to cleanse and remove makeup for late nights. Rough enough to take off the day’s makeup but gentle enough to keep skin fresh and clean.

TIPS TO KEEP THAT HOLIDAY GLOW

During the winter, dry skin is a problem for most women. Use a heavier moisturizer at this time of year.
Apply moisturizers immediately after cleansing to lock in moisture. Look for ingredients like ceramide, which help to restore the skin’s natural barrier.

If your skin becomes dry, decrease retinoids to every other night. Studies show that the anti-aging effects are achieved even if used just 3 times per week.
Don’t forget the lips. Dry chapped lips are common in winter and can make you look worn down. Carry a lip moisturizer or Vaseline in your purse and reapply throughout the day to combat dryness.
The hands should also not be neglected. Carry an intensive hand moisturizer in your purse and apply before putting on gloves on cold winter days. Ingredients like glycerin help to draw in moisture and improve hydration of dry chapped hands.

TMG Faves: Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser…

I am a HUGE advocate of WASHING YOUR FACE! Yes, that’s right people…skincare. The most basic principle of making sure your makeup is flawless is making sure you take it ALL OFF. Now, you all know I am a huge devotee of the Clarisonic BUT these muslin cloths are life changing honey! I’m talking about Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser.

I was first introduced to this amazing cleanser as a travel size in a gift bag it wasn’t until a few months ago that I actually tried it. Woooohooo am I glad I did! There is nothing like feeling something hot on your face to make you feel like you are getting a facial. This is most definitely a spa worthy product, it does take a bit more time than using my beloved Clarisonic BUT it definitely got the job done. All eye makeup was removed and my face felt really clean but not stripped afterwards. The muslin cloths are thin but super sturdy. Bear in mind that the cloths will get dirty (very fast) so you will need to hand wash or do like I did and toss it in the washer. This is a great alternative to using something deep cleaning like the Clarisonic. You will feel like you just had a facial right there in the privacy of your own bathroom!
