Coming from the successful Mamma Mia film comes another enjoyable sequel, Mamma Mia! Here we go again from the story co-written and directed by OI Parker. Catherine Johnson and Richard Curtis co-write the musical, still based on the music of ABBA. The sequel focuses on the story of Sophie, Donna’s only daughter, and Donna’s journey in Greece. Reprising their roles are Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgard, and Meryl Streep. Joining the cast, playing the young versions are Lily James, Jeremy Irvine, Hugh Skinner, and Josh Dylan. Cher and Andy Garcia also have important roles in the film. Produced for USD 75 million, it was distributed by Universal Pictures and it grossed USD 393.7 million at the box office. It’s currently available for streaming on Amazon Prime.
Forever My Girl
Bethany Ashton Wolf writes and directs this rom-com about a country music star who left his first love to pursue his dream of becoming big, based on Heidi Laughlin’s novel of the same name. The film is compared negatively to a Nicholas Sparks production. Although critics dissed the film, the public lapped it up. The movie earned USD 16 million from a SUD 3.5 million budget. Produced by LD Entertainment and distributed by Roadside Attractions, Forever My Girl came out in January 2018. It stars Alex Roe and Jessica Rothe. Crazy Rich Asians
Jon M. Chu helms the rom-com based on the novel by Kevin Kwan. Crazy Rich Asians tells the love story of Nick Young and Rachel Chu. Unbeknownst to Rachel, Nick is the heir of a huge property developer in Singapore. Nick brings Rachel to see his family in Singapore, and is rejected by his snobbish family and friends. Henry Golding and Constance Wu lead the cast as Nick and Rachel, respectively. Produced for USD 30 million, it earned USD 236.7 million at the box office. It was distributed in the US by Warner Bros. Pictures.
Isn’t it Romantic
Written by Erin Cardillo and directed by Todd Strauss-Schulson, Isn’t it Romantic is top billed by Rebel Wilson, Liam Hemsworth, Adam Devine, and Priyanka Chopra. Wilson plays Natalie, an architect who believes that romance is all fantasy. After losing consciousness when she fought off a mugger, she awakes to a surreal PG-13 rom-com world. Her only escape is to actually fall in love. Set for release on Valentine’s Day 2019, the film is produced by New Line Cinema and will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures in the US and the UK.
Second Act
Peter Segal helms the American rom-com Second Act, based on the screenplay written by Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas. Jennifer Lopez goes back to the silver screen to lead the cast. She plays Maya, a 40-something mom who creates a fake Facebook page and gets a second chance at starting her professional career. She is supported by Vanessa Hudgens, Leah Remini, Annaleigh Ashford, Dan Bucatinsky, Freddie Stroma, and Milo Ventimiglia. Produced by STX Films and H. Brothers, it is set for release on December 12, 2018 care of STX Films.
A Star is Born
If you are going for something a bit more serious, a truly engaging and tearjerking drama then A Star is Born, directed by hotty Bradley Cooper is your absolute go to movie.
